If you have landed on this page, then I am assuming you have heard of affiliate marketing but not sure where to start or you are searching Google to see if this affiliate marketing game is legit or just complete, over-rated BS!
I can tell you affiliate marketing is 100% legit and makes for a good business model.
As with all business models, different people have various levels of success. Then there are the unscrupulous people who try to take your money for an overpriced course, that doesn’t teach you anything. (These people give the industry a bad name – I won’t talk about them!)
On this page I have linked to a complete guide for anyone to start making money as an affiliate, you should see the links to the different chapters down the page. First, let me briefly explain what affiliate marketing is and how it works.
If you already know what affiliate marketing is, then feel free to skip ahead to part 1 of this series.
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is an advertising model in which a company compensates third-party publishers to generate traffic or leads to the company’s products and services. The third-party publishers are affiliates, and the commission fee incentivizes them to find ways to promote the company.
Affiliate marketing is an old method, starting way before the online world we seem to live in today. Think back to the door to door salesman selling vacuum cleaners. These salesmen (I should say salespeople here!) earned a commission for every vacuum they sold.
If the salesperson didn’t make any sales, the company producing the product doesn’t lose anything, effectively getting free advertising. Of course, the sales person also gets nothing!
Another way to look at affiliate marketing
There are shoppers searching online for products and services right now. But, with so many choices and offers available they don’t know who to buy from or even which model of product may be best for them.
On the other side we have the product creators, online shops who are struggling to find any customers. These companies often have an affiliate marketing program where they offer anyone who introduces a customer a small commission or affiliate fee which is most likely a percentage of the sale of a product.
As affiliate marketers, we introduce the buyers to the sellers, and simply give our own opinion on a affiliate product or service.
We are not here to sell the product, but more so to offer an unbiased opinion of what it does and most importantly how it compares to similar products.
As a content creator you can discuss all the products with an affiliate offer in your blog posts, whichever product they choose you receive your affiliate income.
This process of creating a blog and publishing posts is often referred to as digital marketing or content marketing. Using social media you can reach more people to grow your following of readers.
How does affiliate marketing work exactly?
Before starting an affiliate business, you need to have a blog and post informative and helpful content for your readers.
Then you will sign up to one of the many companies offering affiliate programs (there are thousands upon thousands of different offers and programs for almost every subject online).
Once signed up, the company or affiliate network (more on networks later) will give you a special affiliate link to place on your blog. When one of your readers clicks this link and makes an affiliate sale, you get a percentage of the sale.
I’ve answered some more frequent questions below, but feel this is a good point to list the 10 chapters in my free guide to becoming an affiliate marketer and earning your first dollar online. Enjoy.
